What Happens After You Enroll in Medicare? 5 Things to Know

You Enrolled in a Medicare Plan — What Happens Next?
You've compared your options, selected a Medicare plan, and completed your enrollment. Now what?
Whether you've enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D), or a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy, there are a few important things to know about what happens next.
At NC Senior Solutions, we believe Medicare should be simple, not stressful! Here's what you can expect after enrolling and a few easy steps to help you prepare for your new coverage.
1. Watch for Your Enrollment Confirmation
After submitting your enrollment application, you may receive a confirmation number, email, letter, or other acknowledgment.
Keep this information! It's your record that an enrollment request was submitted.
Remember, submitting an application doesn't always mean your enrollment has been approved or finalized. Watch for additional communication from your insurance company confirming your enrollment and coverage details.
If you haven't received confirmation or you're unsure about your enrollment status, contact your insurance company or your Medicare agent for assistance.
2. Keep an Eye Out for Your New Insurance Card
Once your enrollment is processed, your insurance company will generally send you a new member ID card.
Here's what to know depending on your coverage:
Medicare Advantage (Part C): You'll typically use your new plan's member ID card when receiving covered medical services. Keep your original Medicare card in a safe place.
Standalone Prescription Drug Plan (Part D): You'll receive a separate prescription drug plan card to use at the pharmacy.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap): You'll generally use both your original Medicare card and your Medigap insurance card when receiving covered services.
Don't throw away your original Medicare card, even if you've enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan!
3. Double-Check Your Coverage Start Date
Your enrollment confirmation or welcome materials should include the date your new coverage begins.
For many people who change Medicare Advantage or Part D plans during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15–December 7), their new coverage begins January 1.
However, effective dates can vary depending on the type of coverage and when you enroll.
Before using your new plan, make sure you know when your coverage officially begins.
If you're switching plans, continue following your current plan's coverage rules until your new coverage takes effect.
4. Review Your Welcome Packet
Your insurance company may send a welcome packet containing important information about your coverage.
Take a few minutes to review:
Your monthly premium, if applicable
Copays, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket costs
Your provider network, if your plan uses one
Prescription drug coverage and pharmacy information
Additional benefits and any rules for using them
For Medicare Advantage plans, pay particular attention to provider networks, referrals, and prior authorization requirements.
If something doesn't look right or you have questions, reach out before your coverage begins.
5. Keep Your Medicare Documents Organized
One of the easiest ways to avoid confusion is to keep all your Medicare paperwork together.
Consider creating a folder for:
Enrollment confirmations
Insurance cards and plan information
Welcome letters
Evidence of Coverage documents
Prescription drug information
Important phone numbers and contact information
Having everything in one place can save time when scheduling appointments, filling prescriptions, or calling your insurance company.
